For those of us who burn to create genius works of art along the lines of famous artists such as Mr. Potato Head or Picasso, there is a wonderful website just for us, called Mr. Picassohead:

The creator of this fun little website has made a little inventory of portrait elements from actual Picasso drawings, that you drag with your mouse to compose and color your own "Picasso", complete with your signature in the master's lettering (see screen shot below).

No, you don't create masterpieces, but a little dash of a chance to be creative for a few minutes can brighten anyone's day. Besides, it kept my two adolescents quiet while I listened to the latest Melvyn Bragg podcast.

I am pleased to announce that the French Post Office has issued ten official Atelier Mends postal stamps, worth .54 euro centimes each, featuring the first work of art I ever sold and the Atelier Mends icon: "Hector".

Hector, for those who are curious, is the most elderly of the birds in my atelier. He is a tiny Chinese dove, with a maddeningly repetitive coo, and his favorite activity is nesting, quivering and cooing with joy in his seed-cup. But that's another story.

By going on the La Poste website and heading for the MonTimbraMoi heading -

you can upload any image you choose on your computer or in their gallery to create your own postal stamp. If you are a company looking to promote its logo, head for:

The whole process takes five minutes and is very user-friendly. You choose your image. You adjust it to the frame of the stamp-to-be. You choose the value of your stamp - I got ones for use on 50g letters. Then you choose either the minimum sheet of ten as I did, or you take the maximum, which is however many you want. they suggest over 500 for interested companies.

I spent slightly over 18 euros to amuse myself, so it's a bit of a folly, but hey, it's an awfully fun bit of folly.

Hector, pour les curieux, est le plus âgé des oiseaux dans mon atelier. C'est un miniscule colombe chinois avec un petit cri répétitif qui rend fou. Son activité préféré est de prendre son mangeoir pour un nid, et il y tremble et il crie avec joie pendant des heures. Mais ça, c'est une autre histoire.

Toute la procédure prend cinq minutes et c'est très convivial. Vous choississez votre image. Vous l'ajustez dans le cadre du futur timbre. Vous choississez la valeur de votre timbre - j'en ai pris pour des lettres de 50g. Puis vous choississez soit le minimum de dix comme moi, soit le maximum, ce que veut dire autant que vous voulez. Ils proposed plus que 500 pour les entreprises.

J'ai dépensé un peu plus que 18 euros pour m'amuser, donc c'est un peu une folie, mais quand-même, c'est de la folie bien amusante.

I got this wonderful quote by Hokusai writing in 19th century Japan from the English-language About website. You can search just about anything on it, but since our concern here is Arty Stuff, this evening I carefully typed in the word "painting" and hit the Search button to see.

It was Pandora's box all right. A first category, called "Essentials", offered me options as diverse as a painting forum, an article on right-brain painting, and step-by-step painting demos and videos. A second category, called "Painting Offers", proposed anything the search engine could find, a little like an eager terrier let loose in the park, from filters to tea strainers. The last category, "Topics", offered me a wide variety of articles to read, for example, on color theory, selling one's paintings and how to paint animals. "Tools" proved to be advertising. But each really interesting category developed with links into a rich arborescence of resources and information on the subject of painting.

J'ai obtenu cette citation, de Hokusai écrivant dans le Japon du XIXème siècle, du site web About, en anglais. Vous pouvez cherchez quasiment tout sur le site, mais comme nous sommes concernés par les Choses Artistiques ici, ce soir j'ai soigneusement tapé le mot "painting" et j'ai cliqué sur le bouton "Recherche" pour voir.

C'était bien la boîte de Pandore. Une première catégorie, qui s'appelle "Essentiels", m'a proposé des options aussi divers qu'un forum sur la peinture, un article sur la peinture en fonction du cerveau droit, et des démos et des vidéos expliquant des choses point par point. Une deuxième catégorie, "Propositions peinture", m'a offert tout ce que le moteur de recherche pouvait trouver, un peu comme un Yorkshire laché dans un parc, allant de filtres aux passoirs à thé. La dernière catégorie, "Sujets", m'a proposé une grande variété d'articles à lire, par exemple, sur la théorie de la couleur, comment vendre ses tableaux, et comment peindre les animaux. "Outils" s'est montré d'être de la pub. Mais chaque catégorie sérieuse développait avec des liens une riche arborescence de resources et d'information sur le sujet de la peinture.

"Drawing" accomplished the same thing. I got information ranging on everything from how to draw manga to how to draw spirals, along with a list of Christmas shopping ideas for the artists on your list, to drawing quotations ((hence the Hokusai above, along with the several Hokusai prints illustrating this article), to a list of the most popular subjects on the site in connection with drawing, for example: how to draw eyes; draw a dog step-by-step; draw a horse step-by-step. I read a great tutorial on how to draw hair, and then got sent to a website that gave me a demonstration. I signed up for a free newsletter on drawing tips, and then finally gave a thought to making that cup of tea I had had in mind two hours before.

I regretfully closed down the site, but not before reading Hokusai's words on his deathbed at the age of almost ninety: "If Heaven had lent me but five years more, I would have become a great painter."

J'ai lu un tutorial génial sur comment dessiner les cheveux, et ensuite le site m'a envoyé sur un autre pour en avoir une démonstration. Je me suis inscrite pour un newsletter gratuit d'astuces en dessin, et enfin j'ai eu une pensée pour la tasse de thé que j'allais me préparer deux heures avant.

Avec regret j'ai fermé le site, mais non sans avoir lu les mots de Hokusai sur son lit de mort à l'âge de presque quatre-vingt dix ans: "Si le Ciel m'avait accordé seulement cinq ans de plus, je serais devenu un grand peintre."

I love the Art and the Bible website. Don't be put off; it is not a fire-and-brimstone sort of thing. Rather, it is a neat little source for exploring Biblical art with a witty twist.

The website offers information and culture tied to Biblical art throughout the centuries, and by clicking on the links you can get a complete view of all the art that the likes of artists as disparate as Edward Burne-Jones or Pieter Bruegel the Elder created to illustrate what is, after all, a work that has given rise to and greatly defined substantial part of our Western culture. And still does. I guess that is my convoluted sentence for the day, excuse me.

The entire King James version of the Good Book is on line, and each presented artwork is linked to the verses inspiring it. Some Old Masters are presented with a biography, and profiles are given of certain cities that have been important in the history of art. A brief glossary (apparently a work-in-progress) and a concordance to search the Bible are offered as well. For real language buffs, you can even check out what the shortest and longest verses are in various books, and other nifty games. Certain recurring Biblical themes in art also are handled with a little interesting yet tongue-in-cheek treatise, such as “The Tower of Babel” or “The Last Supper” or “Off With His Head” (or Decapitation in Biblical art).

What I like best is Art of the Day. Art of the Day is a freeware provided on the Art and the Bible website that sends a masterpiece of Biblical art to your Google homepage each day, with the links to the verses and details on the artist. A delicious daily tidbit. If you like it you can send it or any other work on the site as an e-card.

J’adore le site Art and the Bible. Ne soyez pas hésitant, ce n’est pas un site apocalyptique. C’est plutôt une chouette petite ressource pour explorer l’art biblique avec un peu d’esprit.

Le site propose des informations et de la culture liées à l’art biblique à travers les siècles, et en cliquant sur les liens vous pouvez avoir un survol de tout l’art produit par des artistes aussi différents que Edward Burne-Jones ou Pieter Bruegel dit l’Ancien pour illustrer l’œuvre qui, après tout, a créée et qui a largement définie une grande partie de notre culture occidentale. Et depuis toujours. Je suppose que ça c’est ma phrase compliquée du jour, excusez-moi.

Toute la version King James de la Bible est on line, et chaque œuvre d’art présentée est lié aux versets qui l’ont inspiré. Certain vieux maîtres sont présentés avec une biographie, et de profils existent de certaines villes qui ont été importantes dans l’histoire de l’art. Ce que j’aime le plus, c’est Art of the Day.
