Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5: I. Aria Revisited/Revu
Time flies! In August 2007 I recorded my translation into English (via a route of translating the French translation of the Portuguese original) of the words for this stunning aria on You Tube, at least at the time the only English version existing on the internet. Unfortunately the transmission during the recording was stop-and-start and did not contribute to presenting me always in my best light (one You Tube visitor commented: "What are u on?"). Try to concentrate rather on the words than on me. See the video in question above:
Que le temps passe vite! En août 2007 j'ai enregistré sur You Tube ma traduction vers l'anglais (par la route de la traduction du français du texte d'origine en portugais) des paroles pour cette aria soufflante, et au moins à l'époque c'était la seule version anglaise en existence sur l'internet. Malheureusement la transmission pendant l'enregistrement était un peu saccadée, ce qui n'a pas contribué à me présenter au mieux (un visiteur You Tube a commenté: "Tu fumes de la moquette?"). Essayez de vous concentrer sur les mots et non pas moi-même. La vidéo en question est ci-dessus:
Why am I bringing up this aria yet again, which was a blog entry already twice (look under entries of The Art of Music)? Because I had the delight of a video response to my You Tube translation of long ago, in which a Spanish visitor, a professional rock musician, "Pilostros", made me a recording of his version of the aria set to his drum playing. Villa-Lobos would have loved it. See below:
Pourquoi est-ce que j'évoque encore une fois cette aria, sujet de blog déjà (regardez sous le rubrique L'Art de la Musique)? Parce que j'ai eu le délice d'une réponse vidéo à ma traduction You Tube d'antan, dans lequel un visiteur espagnol, "Pilostros", musicien professionel de rock, m'a fait sa version de l'aria jouée sur de la batterie. Your translation sounds beautiful--even though my computer presented it to me in fits and spurts--which really did make you seem on drugs. I am now curious about this opera. Wasn't able to hear the drum "sampling" (Alison tells me this is the word for this kind of "intertextuality" in music) of the aria though (again, computer problems).

It is all quite remarkable and I am at a loss for words. It is late on Sunday, February 1. The aria ran deep, Cynthia was a trained soprano and taught me to appreciate opera, but the beauty of your recitativo pushed the aria in the background. Perhaps that was the intent. Difficult, to try to concentrate on the words without looking at the face.
