The Brief Background
Les origines
Originally from the New England village of Roxbury, Connecticut, I lived in New York for ten years working for The New Yorker Magazine and PBS while getting my bachelor's in English lit from New York University and doing freelance journalism on cultural themes. Then three years in Japan where I worked as a writer for Berlitz Asia. I came to Paris in 1985 to do my studies all over again in both French literature and linguistics at Paris III, stopping with a master's in medieval French lit. On graduation in 1990 I started earning my living as a translator and interpreter.
About ten years ago I decided on the goal of establishing myself as a full-time professional artist, and sought to obtain the training and qualifications to do so. The details are described below. Today I live in Montrouge with my children (left), my 16-year-old son Philippe (aspiring writer) and 13-year-old daughter Hélène (aspiring artist), and I work out of my rue Daguerre studio in Paris' 14th arrondissement, just next to Denfert-Rochereau, to produce my drawings and paintings.
Originaire d'un village de la Nouvelle Angleterre (Roxbury, Connecticut), j'ai vécu à New York pendant dix ans, travaillant pour The New Yorker Magazine et PBS tout en étudiant pour mon B.A. (equivalent licence) en littérature anglaise de New York University, travaillant également comme pigiste spécialisé dans la culture. Ensuite trois ans au Japon où j'ai travaillé en tant que rédactrice et professeur pour Berlitz Asie. Je suis venue à Paris en 1985 pour reprendre mes études depuis le début en lettres modernes et en linguistique à Paris III, m'arrêtant au niveau d'une maîtrise en littérature médiévale française. Diplômes en main, en 1990 j'ai commencé à gagner ma vie en tant que traductrice et interprète.
Il y a à peu près dix ans j'ai décidé de me consacrer à l'objectif de devenir artiste professionnel à plein temps, et j'ai cherché à obtenir la formation et les qualifications pour le faire. Les détails sont ci-dessous. Aujourd'hui j'habite Montrouge avec mes enfants (ci-contre), mon fils Philippe (15 ans, aspirant d'être écrivain) et ma fille Hélène (12 ans, aspirant d'être artiste), et je travaille dans mon atelier de la rue Daguerre dans le XIVème arrondissement de Paris, juste à côté de Denfert-Rochereau, pour produire mes dessins et mes peintures.
Training in decorative painting - 1998 to 2000

In 1998 I began looking for training as a decorative arts painter. I obtained a grant and a stipend to study full-time with the Atelier Arts et Métiers. The very demanding director, Vincent da Salva, was a 76-year-old Spanish master craftsman shown right with Nathalie, his partner, collaborator and companion.
I studied how to paint a wide range of false marbles and woods, as well as how to make false limestone pierre de taille, how to do patinas, and a variety of other decorative techniques. I did a second year with this atelier, to study trompe l'oeil, learning how to employ geometry and perspective to create realistic yet artistic works. I was awarded State certification as a decorative painter by a jury of professionals judging my portfolio.
En 1998 j'ai commencé à chercher une formation pour être un peintre en décors. J'ai obtenu une bourse et un revenue mensuel pour étudier à temps complet à L'Atelier Arts et Métiers. Le directeur, Vincent da Salva, avait 76 ans, et il était un maître peintre en décors très exigeant. Il figure sur la photo ci-contre avec Nathalie, sa compagne, sa collaboratrice et son partenaire.
J'ai appris comment peindre une large gamme de faux marbres et faux bois. J'ai également appris comment créer une fausse pierre de taille, comment réaliser des patines, aussi bien que nombreuses d'autres techniques en peinture décorative. J'ai fait une deuxième année dans cet atelier, pour étudier le trompe l'oeil, apprenant comment employer la géométrie et la perspective pour créer des oeuvres réalistes mais artistiques. J'ai obtenu une certification homologuée par l'Etat en tant que peintre en décors, accordée par un jury de professionnels suite à leur examen de mon portfolio.
Early creative art training and the founding of Atelier Mends - 2000 to 2005
Début de formation dans l'art créatif et la création d'Atelier Mends - 2000 à 2005
I then spent several years improving my technical skills: drawing at Ecole Boulle; early painting techniques under Jörge Hermle and Paul Arsic; drawing at the Louvre under Françoise Aubry (photo left of Françoise in her studio in the 14th arrondissement of Paris). It was during this period that I created the entity of Atelier Mends as well and worked for clients in Paris and London (see photo album "Decorative Painting/Peinture décorative"), while also beginning to sell a few pieces of creative work (examples in all "Drawings/Dessins" and "Painting/Peinture").
J'ai ensuite consacré plusieurs années à l'amélioration de mes compétences techniques: étude de dessin à l'Ecole Boulle; les techniques de la peinture ancienne avec Jörge Hermle et Paul Arsic; dessin au Louvre avec Françoise Aubry (photo ci-contre gauche de Françoise dans son atelier du XIVème arrondissement de Paris). C'est pendant cette période également que j'ai créé la société d'Atelier Mends et j'ai travaillé pour des clients à Paris et à Londres (voir l'album "Decorative Painting/Peinture décorative"). J'ai commencé à vendre quelques oeuvres de travail purement créatif aussi (exemples dans les albums "Drawings/Dessins" et "Painting/Peintures").

I gained extensive training as well at the Ateliers de Beaux-Arts de Paris (Glacière, see photo left; Montparnasse, see photo right) in painting, live model drawing and anatomy; I also studied color, painting, modeling in plaster and anatomy at Duperré Applied Arts. I spent about twenty hours a week in professionalizing art training, until my portfolio was accepted by the Ateliers de Beaux-Arts de Paris jury - all told three years of study. But I will probably never stop studying art, so right now I am completing my third year of human and animal anatomy.
J'ai obtenu une formation importante dans les Ateliers de Beaux-Arts de Paris (Glacière, voir photo ci-contre gauche; et à Montparnasse, voir photo ci-contre droit) pour étudier la peinture, le dessin de modèles vivants et l'anatomie; j'ai également étudié la couleur, la peinture, le modelage et l'anatomie à Duperré Arts Appliqués. J'ai passe à peu près vingt heures par semaine dans une formation professionnalisante en art jusqu'à ce que le jury des Ateliers de Beaux-Arts de Paris a accepté mon portfolio - trois ans au total d'étude. Mais probablement je n'arrêterai jamais des études d'art, donc je suis actuellement en train de complèter ma troisième année de l'anatomie humaine et animalier.

In June 2007 I signed the lease for a wonderful space in an artists' villa located in the XIVth arrondissement of Paris. In a verdant little alley away tucked away from the turmoil of the pedestrian street of rue Daguerre, it is a quiet place for creating, and I hope helping others discover or recover their own creativity, via methods such as The Artist's Way (see blog entries concerning The Artist's Way) or by organizing private life drawing sessions with models who have become friends as well. It is also a place to taste a little of what the old Montparnasse creative environment must have been, in that many of the artists in the villa have been here as long as forty years. From the moment the "oldies" invited me to come have a glass of champagne in my neighbor's studio so they could inspect me properly, I have rejoiced in being here.
En juin 2007 j'ai signé le bail pour une espace merveuilleuse dans une villa d'artistes située dans le XIVème arrondissement de Paris. Dans une petite allée verdante cachée des turbulences de la rue piétonne de la rue Daguerre, c'est un lieu calme de création et, je l'espère, pour aider les autres à découvrir ou à récupérer leur propre créativité, par des méthodes comme Le Chemin de l'Artiste (voir les entrées de blog concernante Le Chemin de l'Artiste) ou par l'organisation de séances privées de modèle vivant, avec des modèles qui sont devenus des amis. C'est également un endroit pour goûter un peu ce que l'ancien environnement créatif de Montparnasse a dû être, compte tenu du fait que plusieurs des artistes dans la villa sont ici depuis une quarantaine d'années. Depuis le moment où les "anciens" m'ont invité de venir prendre une coupe de champagne pour qu'ils puissent voir un peu ce que c'était, cette nouvelle arrivée, je me réjouis du simple fait d'être ici.
Like most artists I have alternative employment (much to the relief of my banker), and I do translation and communication for a small Paris law firm, in addition to freelance translation; but at every chance I escape to my studio to return to my drawing, painting and writing. I sometimes get up at six to fit in an hour before going to the office, or stop by after work to fit in some time, with the agreement of my very cooperative and understanding adolescent children, talented artists themselves. In those cases I sometimes come to myself with a start, realizing it is 2:00 in the morning and I had better get some sleep in before returning to the office - um - later that morning.
Comme la plupart d'artistes j'ai un autre job (c'est un grand soulagement pour ma banquière), et je fais de la traduction et de la communication pour un petit cabinet d'avocats parisien, en plus de la traduction en profession libérale; mais à chaque opportunité je vole vers mon atelier pour retrouver le dessin, la peinture et l'écriture. Parfois je me lève à six heures pour trouver une heure d'art avant d'aller au bureau, ou je passe par mon atelier après le travail pour, avec l'accord de mes adolescents coopératifs et compréhensifs, qui sont des artistes de talent eux-mêmes. Dans ces cas je reviens parfois à moi-même vers 2:00 du matin, me rendant compte qu'il faudrait aller me coucher pour retourner au bureau - euh - quelques heures plus tard.
